Look no further if you’re searching for the best tour guide in Chicago! We learned a ton and had an amazing time. Thank you so much, Kelli! December 28, 2024 Charles and Judy Chicago and Movies Underground average rating is 5 out of 5 What a fantastic tour of Beneath the Big Screen that my husband and I enjoyed on July 26. We knew some movies were made in Chicago, but not as many that Kelli introduced to our group. Kelli was very detailed as she explained how movies were made — from lighting to how and why various scenes and characters were photographed. Kelli was not only extremely knowledgeable, but also very engaging with our group. We highly recommend this tour. You will not be disappointed! August 2, 2024 Saya Chicago and Movies Underground average rating is 5 out of 5 Very much enjoyed our movie tour with Kelli! She's warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and a good herder of cattle 😄 (which you need to be when navigating busy downtown especially with folks who aren't used to the city). I'm a lifelong Chicagoan and learned facts and visited places I've never been. Our out of town guests loved seeing the pretty architecture, the underbelly of the city, and where various films were shot. I loved the interactiveness, from the questions to the complementary media, and the getting our steps in but in a way that was accessible to everyone in the group. July 28, 2024 Load More Reviews

Miracle on 34th Street Miracle on 34th Street (1994) is a Christmas movie co-written by John Hughes. It is about a young girl who, with the help of a man claiming to be Santa Claus, restores belief in the magic of Christmas for a skeptical lawyer and others in New York City. Today's #OneShotWed shows the exterior of Chicago's James R. Thompson Center, purchased by Google in 2023. In the movie, the building functions as Shoppers' Express, a toy store. While John Hughes did not direct Miracle on 34th Street , he was influential on the look and lighting, American Cinematographer reports: "Hughes wanted to be able to turn the color off of his TV and have the film look like the original — have it look like a 1940s black-and-white movie.” Have you watched this version in black and white? Widows Widows is a 2018 heist movie about four women with nothing in common but a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities. Today's #OneShotWed reflects the funeral of one of those husbands. The TV show on which Widows is based, also called Widows , is set in London. But British director Steve McQueen wanted to adapt the story to Chicago. In his words: "I wanted a contemporary place, a modern city, and Chicago seemed to be that place. Politics, race, corruption, policing, gender, all those things, it was all there, in Chicago.” Read more about Widows ' Chicago connections . And watch Widows ! Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Adventures in Babysitting Today's #OneShotWed comes from Adventures in Babysitting , a 1987 teen comedy set and filmed almost entirely in and around Chicago. Here , Vincent D'Onofrio plays Dawson, the owner of a Chicago garage who—with his long blond hair and sledgehammer—resembles Sara's favorite superhero, Thor. In the original script, eight-year-old Sara was obsessed with She-Ra and He-Man. But the director, Chris Columbus, had never heard of the characters, so he changed them. Thief (1981) This explosion falls at the end of the 1981 neo-noir Thief , directed by Michael Mann and starring James Caan, Jim Belushi, and Tuesday Weld. Here, Caan's character, Frank, has just blown up Chicago's Green Mill Lounge . Established in 1907 as Pop Morse's Roadhouse, the Green Mill has attracted many celebrities over the years: Gloria Swanson, Al Jolson, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holiday, to name a few. Gangster Al Capone also had his own booth at the joint, which is still there. In addition to its firey demise here in Thief, the Green Mill has also been featured in Ocean’s 12, High Fidelity, The Lake House, V.I. Warshawski , and Next of Kin . Finally, did you notice the faux-pas in Thief 's Green Mill scene? If you look closely at the car door when Caan opens it, you'll see the movie lights used to illuminate the scene. One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. The Killer In David Fincher's latest thriller, The Killer (2023), a pivotal scene set in New York was actually filmed in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles at the historic Hotel Baker . That is the focus—or should we say, shallow focus —of today’s screenshot. In the scene about to unfold, The Killer (Michael Fassbender) has just arrived at a swanky restaurant, where he and The Expert (Tilda Swinton) will share a tense interaction before tragedy unfolds. The screenshot shows the exterior of Hotel Baker’s Waterfront Ballroom (not actually a restaurant). The location overlooks the Fox River and normally functions as a space for small wedding receptions. On Facebook, the suburban Chicago hotel embraced its cinematic role despite being disguised in the film. The Killer filmed in Chicago in February and March 2022 in various locations across the city, including Chicago’s Union Station, as you can see in this screenshot . Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. The Bear This screenshot comes from The Bear (FX), the episode "Forks" (2.7). It reinforces the series' theme that time is precious and hesitation has consequences. Clocks, calendars, and time dominate The Bear , which is shot entirely in Chicago. In the show's pilot, a wall clock is literally shown 4 times in 3 seconds. In this episode, "Forks," digital clocks, sitting on bedside tables and hanging on glazed tiled walls, constantly fill the frame. In season 2 in general, The Bear 's characters are always up against time, scrambling to open a new restaurant in 12 weeks. They must complete renovations, secure and train staff, and complete a menu. They must also get appropriate permits, which the tense 10-second countdown of the fire suppression test reminds us. In The Bear , every second does indeed count. Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff? One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. While You Were Sleeping (1995) This close-up shot of an engagement ring falls at the end of While You Were Sleeping , a 1995 romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, and Peter Gallagher. The movie follows a lonely Chicago transit worker named Lucy (Bullock) who pretends to be the fiancée of a comatose man (Gallagher), only to find herself entangled in a web of misunderstandings with his family and brother, Jack (Pullman). (It's a cute movie, and it helped catapult Bullock into movie stardom.) In lieu of a subway token, Jack has just dropped an engagement ring into Lucy’s token booth. The point-of-view (POV) shot is from Lucy’s perspective, which is why it’s filmed at a high angle (she’s looking down at the ring). As you can see from the sign in the background , the scene was filmed at Chicago's Randolph/Wabash ‘L’ station. Unfortunately, for While You Were Sleeping fans, the station is no longer there. Shortly after Randolph/Wabash closed in 2017, its replacement, Washington/Wabash, opened. You'll recognize the new station when you come across its canopies echoing the waves of nearby Lake Michigan . Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff? One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Man of Steel In this scene from Man of Steel (2013), Superman (Henry Cavill) battles his enemy, General Zod (Michael Shannon), to the death. The lengthy fight scene, part of which you can watch below, ends inside Chicago's Union Station . At right, a family is trapped in the fire beams emanating from Zod's deadly eyes. During an interview with Chicago's WGN, actor Michael Shannon—who plays General Zod and went to high school in Chicago's north suburbs—recalls filming this scene in Union Station : ”I’ve been to Union Station a lot, mostly when I'm taking the train somewhere. [For Man of Steel ] we were in the same room where they shot that amazing sequence in The Untouchables . I would look over at the staircase and see the baby carriage coming down the stairs." I'm not sure which is more terrifying: seeing "the ghost" of The Untouchables ' baby carriage or Zod's fiery eyes take down a marble wall inside Chicago's historic Union Station.
