Home Alone 2 Today's #OneShotWed comes from Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), a movie filmed mostly in Chicago while set predominately in Manhattan. In this shot, the film's bandit holds an ad for a massive toy store called Duncan's Toy Chest—clearly one of the first places a kid might venture into while lost in New York. Fun fact: Chicago's Rookery Building serves as the exterior of Duncan's Toy Chest. Check it out in the clip below. Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff? Contagion Contagion is a 2011 thriller that follows the rapid spread of a deadly virus and the efforts of scientists, government officials, and the public to contain and understand the outbreak. Much of the movie was shot here in and around Chicago. Gwyneth Paltrow's character, seen below, dies early in Contagion due to the lethal spread of the virus. In today's #OneShotWed, her character's son watches said demise from the family kitchen. The house in which this scene was shot is located in the Chicago suburb of Glencoe. The family who owned the home stayed in a downtown Chicago hotel for 3 weeks (on the studio's bill, I assume) while set designers modified the furniture and wall paint to fit the story. All was reset after production of course. Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff? On Wednesdays, we post one still from a movie or TV show filmed or set in the Windy City. One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. My Best Friend's Wedding My Best Friend's Wedding is a romantic comedy that centers on Julianne (Julia Roberts), a food critic who realizes she's in love with her longtime best friend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney). Inconveniently, Julianne figures this out only a few days before Michael’s wedding to Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Determined to win Michael’s love, Julianne tries to sabotage the wedding. The 1997 movie—which filmed on location all around Chicago —explores themes of love, friendship, and the complexities of unrequited feelings. This long shot of Julianne and Kimmy takes place inside the china department in the old Marshall Field & Co. department store on State St. (the store is now owned by Macy’s). Here, Julianne tries to convince Kimmy to get her wealthy father to offer Michael a job. This, she knows, will upset Michael and lead him, presumably, to break off the wedding. Julianne's scheme fails. A box office success in 1997, My Best Friend’s Wedding is notable for at least two reasons: First, the movie subverts rom-com tropes . Unlike most romantic comedies, in which the protagonist ends up with the person she loves, My Best Friend's Wedding defies expectations by not having Julianne "win" Michael in the end. Instead, Michael goes through with his marriage to Kimmy, leaving Julianne to come to terms with her feelings and behavior. For a mainstream Hollywood rom-com, the conclusion is rather bittersweet. Second, Julia Roberts plays a villain (of sorts). Considered “America’s sweetheart” at the time, Roberts does not play the typical lovable rom-com heroine in My Best Friend’s Wedding . She spends much of the film manipulating people to break up her best friend's wedding—unconventional actions not only for a protagonist in this genre, but also for Julia Roberts’ established 1990s star image. One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) In National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation , Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) plans the perfect family Christmas, only to have it unravel through a series of comical disasters—from a faulty Christmas light display to unexpected visits from eccentric relatives. In this long shot, Clark stands with his wife, Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), after several failed attempts to light his suburban Chicago house for Christmas. Note the decorative reindeer in the bottom right and copious light strands crisscrossing the entire house. Ultimately, Ellen figures out the electrical problem, and the house will be, shall we say, well lit within the neighborhood. Take a closer look at the Griswold house for a moment. The two-story yellow house is actually a facade, formerly located inside the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, CA. Yes, although National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is set in Chicago, it was filmed primarily in Los Angeles. You may have also seen this house in American Beauty (1999), Hocus Pocus (1993), or the medical drama ER (1994-2009), also Chicago-based. Sadly, in 2023, the Warner Bros. Ranch—along with all the movie and TV “homes” within it—was demolished to make room for office buildings. Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff? One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. The Bozo Show This is an extreme close-up of Bucket #2 from The Grand Prize Game. The ball-in-a-bucket game was featured regularly on The Bozo Show , a highly popular and long-running children's television program that aired on WGN-TV in Chicago and nationally via Superstation WGN. The Grand Prize Game was created in 1962 by Don Sandburg , a producer and writer for The Bozo Show , and Bob Bell , who played Bozo the Clown. In the game, a boy and girl from the studio audience tried to toss ping-pong balls into six numbered buckets, each set farther away. Prizes increased in value with each successful bucket, culminating in a cash bonus, Schwinn bicycle, and a trip. A lucky home viewer whose postcard or envelope was drawn from the Bozo Drum won duplicate prizes of everything each in-studio player won. Fun memories for both Chicago-based kids and those watching outside the Windy City! A more somber memory of The Grand Prize Game comes from November 22, 1963. A news bulletin reporting that John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas, TX, interrupted WGN’s Bozo's Circus (as the show was then called) at the start of The Grand Prize Game. Years later, The Grand Prize Game would be licensed out for both home and coin-operated versions, the latter of which you can see here . Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. While You Were Sleeping This screenshot of a Christmasy Chicago "L" station is from the 1995 romantic comedy While You Were Sleeping . The movie follows a lonely Chicago transit worker named Lucy (Sandra Bullock) who pretends to be the fiancée of a comatose man (Peter Gallagher), only to find herself entangled in a web of misunderstandings with him and his family. (It's a cute movie, and it helped catapult Bullock into movie stardom!) Today's #OneShotWed is an establishing shot. It shows us where Lucy works as a token collector and jumps onto the tracks to save the life of Gallagher's character. The scene was filmed at Chicago's Randolph/Wabash “L” station, but it is no longer there. Shortly after Randolph/Wabash closed in 2017, its replacement, Washington/Wabash, opened. You'll recognize the new station when you see its canopies intending to echo the waves of nearby Lake Michigan . Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff?
