One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Airplane! Airplane! is a 1980 film comedy that parodies popular 1970s disaster movies like Airport (1970), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), Earthquake (1974) and The Towering Inferno (1974). More specifically, Airplane! borrows its story, characters, and some lines of dialogue from an earlier disaster drama, Zero Hour! (1957). In today’s screenshot, a member of ground control accidentally sends a plane crashing through the airport terminal’s window. As the plane breaks through, people scatter right and left. One woman even throws her baby in the air before she runs (look for the pink blanket near the airplane's nose). For all the hijinks, watch the short clip below. While Airplane! was not shot in Chicago, the flight in the story is headed here (from Los Angeles). And Chicago is mentioned nearly 40 times in the screenplay. One of the silliest Chicago references in the film comes in this short insert . As a radio DJ says, “This is WZAZ in Chicago, where disco lives forever,” the airplane flies over WZAZ's tower, destroys its antenna, and kills the signal. Hardcore Airplane! (or Chicago movie) fans can even buy a WZAZ Chicago t-shirt . Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff? One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Child's Play Today's #OneShotWed comes from the 1988 horror movie Child's Play . In the movie, a single mother gives her son a doll, Chucky, only to discover it's possessed by the soul of a serial killer. Eek! In this scene, Chucky kills his first victim, Aunt Maggie, whom he throws out an apartment window. Standing in for the apartment is Chicago's Brewster Building, built in 1893 and originally known as Lincoln Park Palace. The interior, with its labyrinthian stairs, is also used in the movie. - Widows (2018) | Movies Filmed in Chicago | One-Shot Wednesdays
Every Wednesday, join us in guessing the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Visit our archive to play the ones you missed! One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Widows (2018) Today’s screenshot comes from the 2018 Chicago-based heist thriller, Widows , directed by Steve McQueen and based on a British TV series of the same name. Let’s analyze… This is a medium shot of a politician named Jack Mulligan, played by Colin Farrell. Mulligan has just arrived in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood to meet with his political opponent (who is also a crime boss). The well-dressed Mulligan—with his shiny car, chauffeur in the background, and obvious unease over his surroundings—is somewhat out of his element here. Indeed, in the preceding scene, Mulligan is attending a fancy gala with other city bigwigs, all seated underneath the impressive Tiffany Dome at the Chicago Cultural Center. In the background of this shot, those familiar with Chicago’s historic movie houses will recognize the former Central Park Theater (c. 1917), pictured here in full . Located at 3535 W. Roosevelt Rd., the Central Park Theater is notable for several reasons: It is the first movie palace completed by Balaban and Katz and architectural firm Rapp and Rapp , a partnership that would spawn several landmark movie palaces like the Chicago, Oriental (now Nederlander), Riviera, and Uptown. It was among the first movie theaters in the nation to have air-conditioning. It offered a daycare in the basement. The Central Park Theater has served as a church since 1971. Behind the chauffeur, note the crosses etched into the walls. Start at 02:30 to watch the scene from Widows unfold. Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff? One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. The Fury Today's #OneShotWed comes from Brian De Palma's 1978 horror movie The Fury , filmed partly in Chicago. Chicago critic Gene Siskel found little to enjoy about The Fury . He describes this action sequence inside Old Chicago, an indoor suburban amusement park, as "superfluous." (The park no longer operates.) Maybe the scene is unnecessary, but it sure is action-packed. - The Lake House (2006) | Movies Filmed in Chicago | One-Shot Wednesdays
Every Wednesday, join us in guessing the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Visit our archive to play the ones you missed! One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. The Lake House (2006) The Lake House (2006) is a romantic fantasy drama starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. The plot centers on an architect (Reeves) and a physician (Bullock) who exchange letters across a two-year time gap while living in the same unique lake house at different times. In the above screenshot, Bullock’s character collapses by the mailbox, overcome with grief that one of her letters didn't reach Reeves' character in time. Moments later, her sadness turns to joy when he appears. The two kiss and then walk toward the lake house together, as shown in the film’s final shot . Chicago locations, mostly in the Loop , are evident in the movie: the Fine Arts Building, Auditorium Theater, Millers Pub, and Daley Plaza, for example. Cast and crew also ventured out to Chicago's western suburbs for several scenes. Featured are Riverside, Aurora, and most memorably, Willow Springs, where the lake house sits—or once sat. The glass house featured in The Lake House was constructed on dry land at Maple Lake in Willow Springs, IL , and then flooded to appear as if it was on the water. After production, the house was removed and replaced with a fishing dock. This decision was a major disappointment to several prospective buyers who reportedly showered the movie’s producers with inquiries about purchasing the house. The Lake House marks the second Chicago-based movie for both Bullock and Reeves. About a decade earlier, she starred in While You Were Sleeping (1995), he in Chain Reaction (1996). One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. The Blues Brothers (1980) Today’s screenshot comes from a musical number in The Blues Brothers (1980). The gospel song “Let Us Go Back to the Old Landmark" or “The Old Landmark” is performed here by James Brown , and the Rev. James Cleveland Choir. The number was filmed at Pilgrim Baptist Church , 3235 E. 91st in Chicago. Shown periodically in this lively musical number (and above) is Chicago’s own “Queen of Funk,” Chaka Khan . Humorously, despite singing in a movie that celebrates the blues, Khan has said she dislikes the musical genre: “I try to stay away from love songs. I get sick of them. Especially bluesy ones, crying songs, whining about some lost lover—I hate shit like that, and I’ve always felt that way. I’ve never liked the blues.” Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday!
