The Break-Up This screenshot comes from The Break-Up , a 2006 romantic comedy co-starring Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston. Here, we see Vaughn's character working as a tour guide on the Chicago River. The Break-Up 's screenwriter, along with Vaughn (a Chicago native), wanted to be sure Chicago was a star in the film as well: "It was without question something the two made clear right from the get-go: they really wanted this film to not only look like Chicago but really, really embrace Chicago" (Chicago Tribune , 2006). One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Candyman Today's #OneShotWed comes from the horror film Candyman (1992), filmed primarily in the former Cabrini-Green public housing project on the Near North Side of Chicago. In this scene, Candyman (Tony Todd) appears to Helen (Virginia Madsen) in a parking garage and hypnotizes her. According to the film's co-director, Bernard Rose, and Madsen herself, Madsen was actually hypnotized in scenes in which she came into contact with Candyman. Apparently, a keyword was used to make the actress snap in/out of her onscreen trance. Creepy! Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff? One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Man of Steel In this scene from Man of Steel (2013), Superman (Henry Cavill) battles his enemy, General Zod (Michael Shannon), to the death. The lengthy fight scene, part of which you can watch below, ends inside Chicago's Union Station . At right, a family is trapped in the fire beams emanating from Zod's deadly eyes. During an interview with Chicago's WGN, actor Michael Shannon—who plays General Zod and went to high school in Chicago's north suburbs—recalls filming this scene in Union Station : ”I’ve been to Union Station a lot, mostly when I'm taking the train somewhere. [For Man of Steel ] we were in the same room where they shot that amazing sequence in The Untouchables . I would look over at the staircase and see the baby carriage coming down the stairs." I'm not sure which is more terrifying: seeing "the ghost" of The Untouchables ' baby carriage or Zod's fiery eyes take down a marble wall inside Chicago's historic Union Station. One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Source Code Source Code is a 2011 sci-fi thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, and Jeffrey Wright. Gyllenhaal plays a soldier tasked with identifying a terrorist in a simulated reality. In this slightly low-angle long shot, Gyllenhaal’s character stands with his friend/love interest (Monaghan), before the Bean (aka. Cloud Gate ) in Chicago’s Millennium Park . You can watch the full 90-second scene below. According to Gyllenhaal, the cast and crew spent only one day filming Source Code in Chicago. That said, the actor expresses much fondness for the city: "It would have been nice to have the whole movie there; it's such an amazing city and we had a great time the day that we were there. A lot of what you see in the movie is really Chicago that was digitally inserted [in post-production, like Metra trains ]. With a movie like this, with budgets being what they are, there were constraints.” (Chicago Tribune , 1 Apr 2011) Despite the short production schedule, this scene at the Bean is significant to Source Code ’s narrative. The director, Duncan Jones, says, the sculpture “is the perfect representation of what the movie is. We need to begin and end the movie there." And so, they did. Jones talks more about filming at the Bean in this interview . Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff? Every Wednesday, join us in guessing the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Visit our archive to play the ones you missed! One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Prison Break This long shot, filmed at a low angle, comes from the second episode of the TV series Prison Break (2005-2009). Two women, a lawyer (Veronica) and a witness to a murder (Leticia), meet covertly near Crown Fountain in Chicago’s Millennium Park . The meeting does not last long, however. The witness is convinced she was followed and runs away. Her hunch is correct: later in the episode, she is kidnapped and killed. Prison Break follows Michael Scofield, a structural engineer, and his brother Lincoln Burrows, who has been sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit (hence the lawyer/witness meeting above). To save Lincoln, Michael deliberately gets himself incarcerated, using a plan hidden in his full-body tattoo. Yes, a full-body tattoo . (The show is better than it sounds!) Much of Prison Break ’s first season is filmed in and around Chicago. Scenes depicting Fox River State Penitentiary, the fictional prison where Michael and Lincoln are sentenced, take place in Old Joliet Prison in Joliet, IL, where Chicago Movie Tours also gives walking tours . Prison Break ’s first two episodes aired August 29, 2005, and were watched by roughly 10.5 million viewers in the U.S. While on air, the series continued to draw viewers here and around the globe. And when it began streaming on Netflix in 2024, the show raced to the #1 spot, now discovered by a new audience. Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! Think you’re a Chicago screen buff? Backdraft Today's #OneShotWed comes from Backdraft (1991), filmed all over Chicago and its suburbs. In this scene, Chicago's vacant Uptown Theater catches on fire. The victim: the unsuspecting man in today's screenshot. As AFI points out, Backdraft was praised universally for its special effects, particularly the look of fire onscreen. "Fire presents itself as a personality with motive and intent, moving across ceilings and down walls in ways that defy the laws of physics. Filmmakers achieved this by building a set upside down and filming the fire in slow motion as it traveled its natural course along the floor and up the wall. A similar 'upside-down effect' was used to film smoke that appears to retreat of its own accord." Watch some of these effects in the video below. Welcome to One-Shot Wednesday! • My Best Friend's Wedding | Movies Filmed in Chicago | One-Shot Wednesdays

Every Wednesday, join us in guessing the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. Visit our archive to play the ones you missed! One-Shot Wednesday On Wednesdays, guess the Chicago-based movie or television show from one screenshot. My Best Friend's Wedding My Best Friend's Wedding is a romantic comedy that centers on Julianne (Julia Roberts), a food critic who realizes she's in love with her longtime best friend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney). Inconveniently, Julianne figures this out only a few days before Michael’s wedding to Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Determined to win Michael’s love, Julianne tries to sabotage the wedding. The 1997 movie—which filmed on location all around Chicago —explores themes of love, friendship, and the complexities of unrequited feelings. This long shot of Julianne and Kimmy takes place inside the china department in the old Marshall Field & Co. department store on State St. (the store is now owned by Macy’s). Here, Julianne tries to convince Kimmy to get her wealthy father to offer Michael a job. This, she knows, will upset Michael and lead him, presumably, to break off the wedding. Julianne's scheme fails. A box office success in 1997, My Best Friend’s Wedding is notable for at least two reasons: First, the movie subverts rom-com tropes . Unlike most romantic comedies, in which the protagonist ends up with the person she loves, My Best Friend's Wedding defies expectations by not having Julianne "win" Michael in the end. Instead, Michael goes through with his marriage to Kimmy, leaving Julianne to come to terms with her feelings and behavior. For a mainstream Hollywood rom-com, the conclusion is rather bittersweet. Second, Julia Roberts plays a villain (of sorts). Considered “America’s sweetheart” at the time, Roberts does not play the typical lovable rom-com heroine in My Best Friend’s Wedding . She spends much of the film manipulating people to break up her best friend's wedding—unconventional actions not only for a protagonist in this genre, but also for Julia Roberts’ established 1990s star image.
